Former Miner Sloan Wins PGA Event

Former UTEP golfer Roger Sloan defeated Derek Fathauer in a playoff on Sunday to win the Nova Scotia Open, a PGA Tour event in Halifax, Novia Scotia.

Sloan rolled in an eight-foot par putt on the first playoff hole after shooting an 11-under-par 273 (67-65-71-70) in the tournament. Fathauer fired rounds of 70, 66, 71 and 66.

Sloan stood at 10-under-par (132) midway through the tournament before stormy conditions (40-60 mph winds) forced the postponement of Saturday’s play. On Sunday, 36 holes were contested for the first time in nine years.

A native of Merritt, British Columbia, Sloan picked up the winner’s crystal and a check for $117,000.

Sloan played for the Miners from 2005-09, earning second team All-Conference USA honors as a senior when he garnered an individual invite to NCAA Regionals. Sloan led the Miners in scoring average (72.7), top-10 finishes (five) and top-20 finishes (eight) as a senior. His wife is the former Casey McAnelly, a UTEP volleyball player from 2005-08.
