Native El Pasoans take 22 crosses for 22 Walmart shooting victims up Mt. Cristo Rey

Six weeks after the Walmart shooting here in the Borderland, many continue to grieve.

A group of people, some who used to call El Paso home, returned to pay their respects in a spiritual way.

Angie Vazquez, a native El Pasoan, like many, was devastated after seeing images from the tragic Walmart shooting on August 3rd.

‘It hurt. I don’t know how to explain the hurt that I felt…and when I saw what was happening, it broke my heart and it broke my heart because I just couldn’t understand what was happening,” said Angie Vazquez, who now calls the Fort Worth area home.

She told ABC-7 she wanted to something to honor those who lost their lives in the attack. She then turned to a group of friends, several of them Bowie High School graduates, and her faith.

The group took 22 crosses, representing the 22 victims, up Mt. Cristo Rey in Sunland Park, New Mexico.

“I picked Cristo Rey because, Mt. Cristo Rey is a holy place,” Vazquez said. “People come up here and they open their hearts. They come over here asking for miracles. They come over here with so much faith in God, so I wanted (the crosses) to be in a special place.”

The symbolic mountain touches two countries, the United States and Mexico, that the 22 lives lost shared.

“I don’t know anyone that lost their lives but I feel like I do,” Vazquez said. “We all have the same hurt so that was mostly my main message. For everybody to know that no matter where we are at, we’re still a family here in El Paso.”
