Watch Uvalde update: DPS: Shooter entered school without confrontation

KSAT

UVALDE, Texas - DPS Regional Director Victor Escalon provided updates on the mass shooting at Robb Elementary in Uvalde.

Escalon says he was one of the responding law enforcement officers during the event.

He wanted to clear up a report about how the gunman entered the elementary school. Escalon said a confrontation with a resource officer did not happen. Escalon said the gunman walked in, unrestricted through an unlocked door.

Escalon also says the gunman's grandmother, the first shooting victim is alive and stable.

Escalon warned the investigation is in the preliminary stages, and more could change in the coming days and weeks.

Escalon laid out a timeline of events. On Tuesday, May 24, at 11:28 a.m., the suspect wrecked his vehicle, a pickup truck he took from his grandmother, having just shot her.

He jumped out of the passenger side with a rifle and a bag with ammunition.

Escalon said he walked around and saw two witnesses at a funeral home across the street and fired at them.

The suspect walked towards Robb Elementary climbs a fence and enters the parking lot, shooting at the school multiple times.

At 11:40, he walks into the west side of Robb Elementary. According to reports and video, the suspect began firing multiple rounds in the school. Four minutes later, local police departments and the independent school police department are inside, making entry. They hear gunfire, take rounds, move back and get cover.

The suspect entered a classroom that had doors opened in the middle. Officers do not make entry because of the gunfire they're receiving. Officers begin to call for backup resources. Escalon says as they're calling for backup, they're also evacuating students and teachers.

About an hour later, U.S. Border Patrol and tactical teams arrive and make entry, shooting and killing the suspect.

Escalon says a Zavala County Deputy and Uvalde Police department also made entry to kill the suspect.

After the suspect was killed, Escalon says things immediately turned into a rescue operation.

Escalon says there will be more updates as they learn new information.
