Ivan Melendez’s first full season in the minors has gotten off to a rocky start

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- Ivan Melendez is faced with another setback to start his pro career after being hit by a pitch in a game Friday.

Roughly nine months ago Melendez was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks at No. 43 overall. The expectations and potential for the Coronado high school grad were sky high after he won the Golden Spikes Award after breaking Texas' single-season home run record.

But his first full season in the minors has got off to a pretty rocky start.

Melendez started the season on the injured list with a sore left hand. On April 13th he was made active with the Diamondback High-A team the Hillsboro Hops.

Eight days later in the 4th inning of the Hops game against the Eugene Emeralds Melendez was hit by a pitch from Carson Ragsdale. The El Pasoan lay on the floor for quite some time in a considerable amount of pain before leaving the game.

The No. 10 Diamondbacks prospect has been placed back on the injured list and according to Josh Barfield, the Director of Player Development, nothing is broken and he is in good spirits but is being evaluated for a concussion.

Melendez posted a video on Instagram of the play in which he dropped to the ground with the caption, "Seems like I can't catch a break from the injuries lately but gods got a plan for me."
