Passport Fair Brings Crowds To County Courthouse To Apply

By Ken Molestina

EL PASO — The County Courthouse saw a rush of people Saturday as they flocked to take advantage of an open ‘passport fair.’

“I think it’s very important for our security, national security I think everyone should have a passport,” said Maria Contreras, who was applying at the fair.

The event was part of the county’s effort to facilitate the passport filing process for citizens. Officials said the fairs are held monthly to allow for those who can’t make it to the courthouse during the regular week to apply for their passports.

The large turnout meant long lines for applicants, but that didn’t deter Contreras.”I can tell you that I was here this morning at 7:15. There was a long line, so we left, had breakfast and came back,” Contreras said.

With the new federally mandated rules for border crossing in full effect and the springtime weather ushering in vacation time travel plans, passport demand is increasing again.

For those unable to make to the fair Saturday, county officials said they can always come to the county clerk’s office to apply. The cost is $25 for the processing fee and $75 for those 16 and older, $60 for those under 16.
