Statement To ABC 7 From Vega’s Lawyer

I am writing per your request that I respond to the information that was provided to KVIA by Mayor Cadena.

I understand that Mayor Cadena contacted KVIA and volunteered certain public records dealing with various court cases involving Mr. Vega. The Mayor told you that there is no connection between the cases reflected in the records and his decision to try to fire Mr. Vega. Since the Mayor concedes that these records have nothing to do with his efforts to oust the Marshal, I cannot imagine any reason that he would give you those records except as part of an effort on his part to damage Mr. Vega’s reputation.

That the Mayor did not tell you that the criminal charges brought against the Marshal more than 14 years ago were dismissed only serves as additional evidence that the Mayor is attempting to discredit the Marshal.

As Trustee Barraza has already advised you, the Mayor and the Trustees were aware of the legal matters in Mr. Vega’s past when they hired him. The Mayor’s claim to the contrary is shameful, and will create further division between him and the Trustees.

Mr. Cadena’s efforts to attack Mr. Vega appears to be part of the Mayor’s continuing retaliation for the Marshal’s involvement in exposing the Mayor’s trip to a casino in El Paso.
