University Of Texas Hires New Loan Services Director

AUSTIN (AP) – The University of Texas hired a former vice president of the National Student Loan Program to oversee the school’s on-campus financial aid resource office.

Thomas Melecki will be director of the Office of Student Financial Services. The university fired previous director Lawrence Burt last year after determining his ownership of stock in a loan company violated university rules.

Burt had been named as part of the New York state attorney general’s investigation into the $85 billion student loan industry. Melecki worked 17 years with the NSLP, a private non-profit corporation that is the nation’s sixth-largest student loan guaranty agency.

He also worked at the at the University of Texas from 1978-1982 in student financial services and also received his doctoral degree at UT.
