Update: Power Outage In Northeast El Paso
Thousands of residents in Northeast El Paso lost electricity Monday at around 12:30 p.m.
El Paso Electric told ABC-7 the cause of the outage is under investigation.
Emergency radio transmissions indicated there were reports of malfunctioning traffic lights at the following intersections: Rushing at Fairbanks, Dyer at Hondo Pass, Dyer and Diana, Railroad at Diana.
Frustrated residents called the KVIA newsroom wondering what the problem was, as the power seemed to be on, then off, then on again.
El Paso Electric Spokeswoman Teresa Souza confirmed 7,500 residents experienced the power outage, and all power was restored within 30 minutes.
Last Monday, June 6, 163,000 people were without power — some in Northeast El Paso. An EPE spokeswoman said a transmission line malfunctioned at a northeast plant and as a result, other parts of the electrical system had to be shut down for protection. The outage also affected residents in West and East El Paso, and Socorro. Most had their power restored in 45 minutes, but some had to wait as much as 3 hours.
Northeast residents in the area between US-54 and Dyer were hit again June 1, when an electrical pole caught fire, knocking out power to about 6,000 people. Crews restored electricity within two hours.
