City holds “emergency preparedness” expo

Would you be prepared in the event of a natural disaster? As hurricanes hit areas across the country, the city of El Paso is making sure you know what to do if disaster strikes.

The city held an emergency preparedness event at the convention center Saturday.

Sara Saucedo with the city’s public health department says events like Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma have El Pasoans asking questions.

“It’s definitely triggered some emotion because of recent events,” Saucedo said.

The borderland has been hit hard recently with heavy rain, especially in the Socorro area.

In the event of an emergency, have a bag ready with water, food, a first aid kit, tools and a radio.

“Have some pet information as well to identify you pets if they get lost,” Saucedo said.

Also, have an evacuation plan.

“Just a basic plan of the what if’s, where to go, who to call,” Saucedo said.

If you weren’t able to make it to Saturday’s event, it is national preparedness month. The city encourages you to celebrate and prepare with your family all month long.
