Former Cowboys RB DeMarco Murray announces retirement after seven seasons
Three-time Pro Bowler and Cowboys single-season rushing record holder DeMarco Murray is calling it a career.
Murray made the announcement official during his Friday appearance on ESPN’s NFL Live.
The Las Vegas native was selected by the Cowboys in the third round fo the 2011 NFL Draft with the 71st overall pick out of Oklahoma, making him the sixth running back picked up until that point.
The former Sooner started out splitting carries with Felix Jones and Tashard Choice, but slowly made himself the unquestioned starter. He toiled away for the Cowboys for three years, making the Pro Bowl in 2013 and 2014 – his record-breaking season in which he rushed for 1,845 yards.
He landed with the Tennessee Titans in 2016 after a brief one-year stint with the Philadelphia Eagles and had a bounce back year where he found himself back in the Pro Bowl lineup.
His last season in the NFL was plagued with injuries, starting with hamstring issues in Aug. 2017, and culminating with an MCL injury in Dec. 2017.
Murray finished his career with 7,174 yards and 49 touchdowns, averaging 4.5 yards per carry. He also succeeded as a receiver, with 307 receptions for 2,165 yards and six scores.
