ABC-7 StormTrack Weather: Above Average Heat With Isolated Storms Possible

El Paso and the surrounding region are in for another round of dangerous summer heat, with temperatures climbing into the upper 90s and low 100s through the end of the week and into next week.

A strong area of high pressure is currently centered over northern Arizona. Meanwhile, moisture in the atmosphere combined with daytime heating will trigger scattered thunderstorms this afternoon, mainly across the Gila and Sacramento Mountains.

Storms that develop over the higher terrain will move west-southwest toward nearby lower elevations during the afternoon and early evening. Some of these storms could produce locally heavy rainfall of 1 to 1.5 inches in a short period of time, raising the threat for flash flooding, particularly across burn scars, low-lying areas and locations with poor drainage.

For El Paso and the lower elevations of southern New Mexico and far West Texas, however, heat will be the main concern. High temperatures are expected to reach the upper 90s to low 100s, with some locations potentially challenging daily temperature records.

Thursday and Friday are expected to bring a similar weather pattern. Storm chances will remain focused mainly over the mountains, while hot and mostly dry conditions continue across the lowlands.

Looking ahead to the weekend and early next week, storm coverage is expected to decrease as drier air moves into the region. That means the heat will become the dominant weather story, with highs continuing in the upper 90s to low 100s across the lowlands. Higher elevations will see temperatures in the 80s and low 90s.

The persistent heat could challenge daily records across the region.

For El Paso, residents should prepare for several more days of dangerous heat. Stay hydrated, limit strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day and never leave children or pets in a parked vehicle.
