Motorcyclist killed in east El Paso collision with car was former Americas High football player
EL PASO, Texas -- A motorcyclist killed after colliding with a car at an east El Paso intersection was identified Thursday as a former Americas High School football player.
The Wednesday night crash that claimed 20-year-old Jeremy Landavazo's life happened at Pellicano and Ted Houghton, near the high school.
The mangled motorcycle wreckage could be seen sitting in middle of the intersection as police traffic investigators worked late into the night trying to determine what led to the collision.
On Thursday, Sgt. Enrique Carrillo said it had been determined that the car was making a left turn to drive into the high school's parking lot and "failed to yield the right of way," pulling out in front of the motorcycle.
Police did not indicate whether the car's driver, 38-year-old Christopher Madrid, would face any charges in what was the city's 56th traffic death of the year.
While police did not cite speed as a factor in the crash, a 73-year-old woman who lives nearby broke down in tears Thursday at news of Landavazo's death as she recounted the repeated problems with speeders in the neighborhood.
Rita Patterson told ABC-7 that she had surveyed and petitioned the city on two occasions to install stop signs along that now-deadly stretch of road. She said both requests were rejected by the city.
Landavazo, a 2018 AHS graduate who played on the football team, was taken to Del Sol Hospital with serious injuries after the crash, but police said he died Thursday morning.
In a tweet on Thursday, his former football teammates wrote: "Our hearts are filled with sadness. One of our Trailblazers has left us. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Landavazo family. You will truly be missed. We love you. May you Rest In Peace Jeremy."
