EL PASO, Texas --- As the East Coast of the U.S. got soaked with rain and floods from a major weather system, a record heat wave took place in Texas and across the Borderland this weekend.

El Paso broke a high temperature record for a third-straight day on Sunday. The official high at El Paso International Airport was 96 degrees, breaking the old record of 95 set in 2000.

On Saturday, El Paso also set a new high temperature mark as the airport recorded 96 degrees, breaking the old record by one degree. A record high also occurred Friday in El Paso with the temperature reaching 97 degrees.

"Although short of the infamous century mark, it's still quite steamy out there," said a statement from the National Weather Service.

It was possible though that El Paso could reach 100 degrees for the first time this year at some point during this coming week. That's because the record heat does not stop once the weekend's over, as the NWS said hot conditions were expected to continue for the week.

The agency on Sunday tweeted: "Disappointed we didn't break the record for earliest 100-degree day in El Paso? Well, we may get a second chance on Thursday. Current expected high is 98 or 99, but if we manage to eek out another degree to 100, it would be the earliest by one day!"

Temperatures near 100 degrees or higher were forecast to remain this week for much of Texas. Even Dallas and San Antonio could reach their first 100 degree days of the year, NWS forecasters said.
