City begins work on unstable Duranguito structures in Multi-Purpose Center footprint

KVIA

EL PASO, Texas -- The City of El Paso began work on two structures in Duranguito, to prevent further damage to them through the monsoon season. The buildings are located in Duranguito within the area of the voter-approved Multi-Purpose Performing Arts and Entertainment Center.

The buildings are 300 West Overland and 212 West Overland. The work is expected to take about two weeks, barring any weather events.

"We determined that there was slightly more continued deterioration in those two structures and now that monsoon season is here upon us, we wanted to make sure those repairs were done to have those buildings stabilized and not occur any additional damage," said Daniela Quesada Chief Architect for the City of El Paso Capital Improvement Department.

The city aims to prevent further deterioration while conducting an MPC programming and feasibility study.

That Feasibility study began in May and will include a public comment session. Results of that Feasibility study will be presented to council in early 2023.

The MPC , or downtown arena project, has long drawn the attention of many in our community.

The first public comment session is set for 5:30 PM Thursday in the Blue Flame building downtown.

The budget to shore up the two buildings is coming out of the general fund as approved by the council, and is approximately $29,000.
