Man Shot By El Paso Police Dies In Hospital

EL PASO, Tx. – Police officials have identified the man shot dead by police Saturday night as 27-year-old John Dalton Martinez.

Officials say two police officersfired several gunshots atMartinezafter he allegedly pointed a gun at them inside the Lucky Star Food Market located at 1100 E. Yandell.

Officers tell ABC-7 that the officers were conducting surveillanceat another location when they heard gunshots at the store.

Investigators said the officers went inside the store and confronted Martinez, who was allegedly armed with a semi-automatic weapon. Officers said they also found a man inside the store that had allegedly been shot by Martinez. They identified the victim as 27-year-old Julio Calderon.

Martinez repeatedly ignored several warnings to put down theweapon and pointed the gun at the officers, investigators said. Officers shot Martinez several times, critically injuring him.

Martinez died at the scene and Calderon was transported to Thomason hospital.

Investigators later learned Calderon had been involved in an altercation with a relative of Martinez.As a result of the altercation, Martinezchased Calderon into the store and shot him in the hand.
