Presidio, Texas, Shores Up Seeping Levee

PRESIDIO, Texas (AP) – A levee that separates the rain-swelled Rio Grande from this small border town has been shored up after residents and officials worked to keep it from seeping, but the river’s about to get more water.

Sheriff Danny Dominguez said Thursday that truckloads of sandbags were placed at the bottom of the levee Wednesday evening and that it’s stabilized.

But because of flood conditions in Mexico, officials there are releasing water from dams along the Rio Conchos in the state of Chihuahua, said Sally Spener, a spokeswoman for the United States section of the International Boundary and Water Commission. That water will flow into the Rio Grande near Presidio, she said.

“We have been monitoring the situation closely,” she said. “At this point the levee system is working as it should, holding back the water.”

Presidio is about 200 miles southeast of El Paso.
