Local Border Patrol union endorses Trump for president

endorsement ever. the national border patrol council — which says it represents more than 16-thousand agents — endorsed donald trump for president. but some agents and members of our community were pushing the local union to step away from the national council’s endorsement. abc-7’s jerry najera is live with the story … rick estela the border patrols el paso sector consists of about 1,700 agents. some of those agents ,several city and county leaders, along with immigrant advocates don’t agree with trump’s views but tonight the local union voted to endorse donald trump for president. “a friend of mine reached out t me” former city rep susie byrd tells me it was border a patrol agent who called out for help. “he was seeing some of th comments on facebook and social media from elected officials from members of the public and he wanted to express that he felt it wasn’t necessarily reflective of the agents that he knows and works with” agents wished to remain anonymous but felt the community might back the idea of stepping away from the endorsement. “h wanted to see if he could get support from local elected officials to say they would support an effort to reconsider the nationals endorsement of donald trump” and they did a letter to the local union 1929 signed by u.s. rep beto o’ rourke mayor oscar leeser and county judge veronica escobar stated: “we do not believe this endorsement reflect the values of the border patrol agents that work in this region,” “one of the reaso that el paso is the safest city in the united states is because of the trust developed between law enforcement and the el paso community.” “we have long history of as a organization of trying to work with the border patrol” border network for human rights policy director robert hymen says trump’s stance on immigration would hurt immigration reform. “mor important the candidate himself the sort of rhetoric and vile that his campaign has brought up i think is a step backward” hymen urged the local union to to reject the endorsment. “even in a institution like the border patrol actually understands realities of the border and immigrant communities and rejects that misplaced violence and racism and xenophobia and is looking for something that misplaced violence and racism and xenophobia and is looking for something better.” the vote was close it came down to a narrow margin of 14 to 13 for the endorsement of trump. it’s no longer a question of ‘if’– but rather ‘when’
