El Paso Comic Con returns under new management
A convention in Downtown El Paso is catering to the geek in all of us. Featuring TV shows, movies, comics, anime and more, the El Paso Comic Con has something for fans of it all and more.
“Amazing event, you know, love it,” said Amber Zavala. “The cosplays, you know, the vendors. Everything from Star Wars to Anime of Japan. It’s just really, really amazing.”
Also called EPCON, the renewed event has new organizers for 2016. Along with the gaming and geek culture exhibitors and vendors, there’s also a strong cosplay community in attendance, gathering to show off their latest character costumes.
“I love these events, and I love coming to these events,” said Jesus Abraham Coronado, dressed in the armored Batman suit from Batman vs Superman. “It’s a fun place to meet friends.”
Featured at the convention are replicas of some very famous props: the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Van, the RV from Breaking Bad, and the original Batmobile from the 1960s Adam West series.
“This is a fully functional replica,” said owner Michael Esch. “As in, when we got this replica car, we realized it had gadgets, but nothing really worked. So we made everything work.”
The “Albuquerque Batmobile” is a faithful recreation of the original and has all the gadgets, bells and whistles seen in the classic show. And fans getting their pictures also get to support a charitable spirit.
“We use the car to pick up soldiers returning from overseas, cancer kids – I’m a cancer survivor,” Esch said. “We try to give back.”
It’s one of El Paso’s biggest opportunities for fans of all kinds to come together and share their excitement and interests.
“This is like my religion,” Coronado said. “So these events are always fun for me.”
EPCON continues Sunday at the El Paso convention center from 10:30 a-m to 6 p-m. Tickets for the final day cost $25-dollars each. For more info on the event and exhibitors, you can visit EPCON’s website here.
