Fan hit by ball

not all fun and games at the downtown ballpark. another baseball fan was hit by a foul ball today – and rushed to the hospital! witnesses say the fan was taken to umc after the 6th inning of the game against the tacoma rainiers. abc-7’s josie ortegon is live … rick, estela. fans we spoke with today say it all happened within seconds. the fan was then taken from the game on a gurney and rushed to the hospital. some witnesses told me a man was hit, but one fan who was there sent us this video she says shows a woman who was hit. she says the fan tried to catch the ball but it struck her in the face. i’m told the fan was on the ground for at least fifteen minutes while emergency responders provided first aid. the patient was then taken to umc, condition unknown right now. lat season, two chihuahuas fans were struck by a bat right behind the home dugout. we spoke with several fans at the game who said while it they do worry about being hit by foul balls, they know it’s a worry they agree to when attending games: “it’s part of the ball game, it happens in little league, it happens in major league, everywhere, its part of the game.” “you know my daughter rides horses and any equine facility you go to you know when you walk in, you know that its there are risks involved with the sport but you did it because you love it. and i think it’s the same for baseball, football.” as we’ve reported, southwest university park has limited foul ground because of its tight layout. in december, mlb commissioner made new safety recommendations like possibly extending the netting behind home plate to shield fans from line drives and bats. chihuahuas general manager brad taylor told us the ballpark is in compliance with mlb’s standards. the best advice for fans is to stay alert and pay attention to the game at all times. ok, josie, live downtown. thank you.
