Student-run farm in Horizon City is big hit with teacher and students alike

HORIZON CITY, Texas -- Students who attend the IDEA Horizon Vista school have the unique opportunity to learn about agriculture by becoming farmers themselves. Led by their agriculture teacher, Thomas Hernandez, students are guided through each step of farming- from seed to full fruit or edible veggie. The coolest part- the students get to eat their own produce.

"All the produce that's grown here, all the fields we have go straight to the cafeteria. Everything we grow is fed straight to the kids. They package it, wash it, and clean it up in the cafeteria, and make it into super delicious stuff," said Hernandez.

Hernandez's passion for farming is something he is trying to share with the next generation. His message is that farming is of the upmost importance, and that it is possible to grow organic, healthy foods in your own backyard. The student farmers have been loving this experience.

"It's super rewarding. Most of them have never seen anything like this before, so when they're out here planting seeds or just harvesting stuff, it's super rewarding to see them not only harvest it, but eat it for lunch, and they really, really like it," he said.

Hernandez hopes that his agriculture lessons will cause at least one student to chose farming as a career.
