Senator Ted Cruz in Las Cruces for rally with Congresswoman Yvette Herrell Monday

LAS CRUCES, New Mexico – Senator Ted Cruz and Congresswoman Yvette Herrell held a rally in Las Cruces for the “Take Back America” bus tour. 

With midterm elections around the corner the “Take Back America” bus tour brought national and local leaders to the Farm and Ranch State Museum.

Immigration was a big focus Monday evening with Cruz saying in part the cause of the crisis is President Biden’s decision to withdraw the “Remain in Mexico” agreement.

"As a Texan I don't have to tell the people of New Mexico about the disaster that is unfolding on our southern border. The worst illegal immigration in 62 years,” Cruz said.

Herrell told ABC-7 the border needs to be secured from people that come illegally who she argues get access to medical, education and food.

“We’ve got homeless veterans that don’t get this much help, we’ve got kids going to bed hungry tonight in the second congressional district that don’t get the same benefits as those coming here, breaking the law to do it,” Herrell said.

Yvette Herrell also touched on abortion that has been a big topic surrounding New Mexico. 

“I am pro-life, I’m proud of it and I say it’s time we start letting women know they have choices like adoption, like resources, like support groups, we need to have those kinds of conversations,” she said. 

Meanwhile, New Mexico Democratic congressional candidate Gabe Vasquez continues to challenge the Republican incumbent who is seeking reelection in the state's southernmost congressional district.

“Ted Cruz and Yvette Herrell are too extreme for New Mexico — both of them have abandoned their constituents and put party politics ahead of the people they represent. Yvette Herrell has opposed lowering costs for New Mexican families, voted against health care for our veterans, and sponsored bills that would put women and doctors in jail. She recently left New Mexicans out in the cold who were counting on her support for wildfire relief. Instead, she voted no. We need new leadership that will invest in our communities, lower the cost of health care and child care, support our workers, pass comprehensive immigration reform and always put New Mexicans first. That’s what I’ll fight for in Congress every day.”

Voting for New Mexico's 2nd Congressional District will take place on November 8th.
