State Police Investigate Shooting By Luna Deputy

DEMING, N.M. (AP) – State police are investigating a shooting involving Luna County deputies.

State police say deputies were sent last night to an area 18 miles south of Deming, where a landlord said she’d been assaulted by a tenant while cleaning up the property.

While deputies were talking to her about 8 p.m., someone shot at them. They took cover and called in a SWAT team, who contacted the suspected shooter, the 60-year-old tenant, David High.

State police say that about 11 p.m., High came out armed with a handgun and fired twice toward a police negotiator. SWAT members returned fire, hitting High in both legs.

He was in stable condition in an El Paso, Texas, hospital. State police say the injuries don’t appear to be life-threatening.
