UTEP President To Serve On National Panel

WASHINGTON (AP) – The president of the University of Texas at El Paso will serve on a national panel studying minority representation in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields.

The National Academy of Sciences chose UTEP President Diana Natalicio to serve on the committee. It will study barriers to participation by minorities and other underrepresented groups in the fields.

It will also study ways to increase their numbers in the fields. El Paso Democratic Rep. Silvestre Reyes created the panel in a bill signed into law last summer.

More than 70 percent of UTEP’s student population is Mexican American. Many students enter its science and engineering programs.
