Family Of Man Who Shot Police Speaks To ABC-7

EL PASO, TX — Daniel Nares apologizes for the actions of his older brother, but adds that the police officers who entered his brother’s home did not identify themselves.

Mauro Sergio Nares, 38, was arrested Saturday, charged with Criminal Attempt Capital Murder in the shooting of two police officers. He is in the County Detention Center under a $1.5 million bond.

Police officials say three officers were responding to a burglary call in the 9900 block of Moses in the Lower Valley at 7:21am. But after checking the home and talking with the Nares’s mother, they determined there was no burglary.

Daniel Nares spoke to ABC-7 Sunday night, hours after speaking to his brother at the jail.

Daniel says his brother Mauro was the one who made the call to 911 because he thought he heard someone on the property. While Mauro saw policearrive and leave, he was not put at ease by his mother, who “looked nervous” when she told Mauro the police told her the house was clear.

Daniel says that’s when his brother called police again. Daniel tells ABC-7 his mother told officers she didn’t know who was calling police, and that is when officers asked to check the inside of the home.

“The police didn’t identify themselves, they just pushed the door, and he (Mauro) saw a person kneeling down and that’s when he started shooting,”said Daniel, who was not at the home during theincident.

“When he saw it was police he said, ‘Oh my God, I’m sorry,’ and he threw the rifle.”

Police officials say the officers did announce their presence while checking the home.

The two officers shot, Andres Guerraand Leovardo Tellez, are recovering from their wounds.
