Petland Going Out Of Business And Suing Local Animal Activists

Petland’s east side store will close its doors for good by the New Year but before it does, the franchise owners will take some local animal activists to court.

“We’re putting together a legal team, we’ve been advised by our attorneys not to comment on the case, obviously we have to protect ourselves,” said Dory Mulder with the Southwest Collie Rescue.

She and three others from different animal welfare organizations were served with court papers Monday. Some of the defendants have spoken out about against Petland, questioning whether their for-sale pets come from humane breeders.

“We’re all in this together,” said Mundy.

Petland’s owner Marlene Estrada referred questions about the case to attorney Eric Darnell. ABC-7 left a message at his law firm Saturday. Back in July, Estrada defended the store’s practices in an interview with ABC-7.

“We do our due dilligence to go out and do routine inspections,” Estrada said of the places Petland gets their animals.

News of Petland’s plans to close comes on the heels of a new ordinance passed by City Council Tuesday. Among other things, there will now be a ban on the sale of cats and dogs younger than a year old.

The new ordinance takes effect January 1st– the very same day Petland is set to close.
