Slain Officer Donation Requests May Be Scams
El Paso police officials said they’ve received calls from concerned citizens about requests for donations intended to benefit the family of Officer Karl McDonough.
Police said the solicitations are happening over the phone. People are reportedly being asked to send a donation and told they will receive a receipt later.
The El Paso Municipal Police Officer Association (EPMPOA) has announced that an account has been created at Greater El Paso’s Credit Union (GECU). Donations to the family can be made there.
Police officials ask the public to be aware of any possible scam.
Police said although these efforts to raise money are appreciated, they are in no way associated with the city of El Paso and the El Paso Police Department.
The city of El Paso does have a benefits package in place for the fallen officer’s family, police officials explained.
Ron Martin, president of the EPMPOA, said the association is not making any requests for donations over the telephone and is merely affording the public the opportunity to volunteer their donations at GECU.

Association officials said a fundraiser in honor of McDonough is scheduled for Monday at the Chik Fil A at 1840 N. Zaragoza Road. The patrolman died just blocks away from the restaurant.
Officials said a portion of all sales made during the ‘Spirit Night’ between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. will go to McDonough’s family.
