Four People Survive Head-On Collision

Four lives spared.

Investigators are trying to figure out how two SUVs collided head-on Wednesday afternoon. The crash happened near the 6000-block of Highway 478, about 3 miles south of Las Cruces.

Four people involved were transported to a local hospital with non life-threatening injuries, New Mexico State Police said, but no one involved remembers exactly what happened.

A witness, 10, described how scary the crash sounded.

?Like a thunderstorm, but like glass flying everywhere,? Antonio Holguin, who was walking to his friend?s house to play when the cars collided, said.

Broken glass and busted-up sheets of metal littered the pavement.

The impact from the two SUVs hitting each other head-on did not spare much on the vehicles. But miraculously, everyone involved survived.

Three people were in an SUV headed southbound on Highway 478, and one driver was the sole occupant in an SUV traveling northbound.

Holguin said, when he heard a loud bang, he ran back home and told his mom to call for help.

“There was this car coming from that side and he was going fast, and there was a car coming from that side and it came over and hit together,? Holguin, who described the crash with his outspread arms, said. ?I was so scared. My dad lives on that side and I thought it was his car. At first my heart, it felt like it stopped. It was scary.”

It is too early in the investigation to know if alcohol played a role, State Police said. Everyone involved was wearing a seat belt.
