Update: Woman Dies After Vehicle Crashes Into Canal

A woman is dead after the car she was in crashed into the American Canal near Park Street in downtown El Paso.

El Paso police investigators have identified the victim as Corina Bejarano, 21.

El Paso Fire officials said about 12 of their units responded to the crash at 1:40 a.m. Saturday.

According to authorities, the car left the roadway and ended under water in the canal. Water rescue divers with the El Paso Fire Department found the car with Bejarano dead inside.

El Paso police investigators said Bejarano was speeding east when she missed a curve on the Cesar Chavez highway, the car veered off the road, went up the embankment, flew over two sets of railroad tracks and landed in the canal.

Police officials said Bejarano was wearing her seat belt, but was not driving with her headlights on.

Fire officials said it took about four hours to get the car out of the canal.

The crash is still being investigated by the El Paso Police Department. Officers said speed was a factor.
