Police: Las Cruces Teen Punches Teacher And 2 Cops
A high school student was arrested Thursday morning after he allegedly physically assaulted a teacher and two Las Cruces Police officers who responded to the initial incident.
Trea Ramzy, 16, is charged with two counts of battery on a peace officer, one count of battery on a school employee and one count of assault on a school employee. The three battery charges are each fourth-degree felonies.
Shortly before 9 a.m. on Oct. 28 Las Cruces Police were called to the CrossRoads alternative school at 411 N. Armijo St. after Ramzy allegedly threw a punch at a teacher. A Las Cruces Police officer investigating the incident found enough probable cause to detain Ramzy. As the officer began placing handcuffs on Ramzy, the student spun around and allegedly struck the officer once on the mouth.
The officer pushed Ramzy away and reached for his Taser. At that time, Ramzy rushed the same teacher he threw a punch at earlier and threw two more punches, police said. One of those punches struck the teacher’s chest. When it was safe to do so, the LCPD officer fired the Taser and subdued Ramzy. The student was then placed in handcuffs.
As the student was being escorted to a patrol car, and in the presence of his mother who was reportedly at the school since before classes began, Ramzy spit in the face of another LCPD officer who had arrived to assist.
The teacher and the officers were not seriously injured.
Ramzy was given a Juvenile Class III citation and was turned over to the custody of the Dona Ana County Detention Center .
The CrossRoads school, administered by the Las Cruces Public Schools, is a program for students who are serving long-term suspensions from their home schools.
