Sugar Detox: Day 2
Day Two: Irritable? I’ll show you irritable.
It was 6 a.m. when it happened. I cheated. No, I didn’t steal away for a trist with Brad Pitt’s El Paso twin.
I cheated with the love I’m trying to break it off with – chocolate. I woke up this morning to find my mother had sent me a ‘Valentines box of candy love’ filled with enough caramel, chocolate, and sugar to put me into post V-Day coma. Under non-detoxing circumstances I would have polished off the entire box within 12 hours.
I love my mother but she knows my vices. Strawberry Gushers, Russell Stover’s caramel and marshmallow-filled chocolate hearts, and handfuls of Hershey’s Kisses.
I ate two of the chocolate hearts, six Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup mini’s, and a few of the kisses.
This was a big mistake. Not only did I flush my system with sugar, I did it at the worst possible time.
In the morning, your blood sugar is at the lowest it will be all day. Starting the morning with a massive dose of sugar, be it chocolate or a high-in-sugar cereal, causes your body to release large quantity of insulin to compensate. The sugar is quickly processed into energy, but it doesn’t last long.
Cue my sugar crash.
Not only did I go from 0-60 mph in a matter of minutes, it only took a short time for my body to process all that sugar and go back to zero.
Your body loves balance. This kind of roller-coaster behavior only sends more signals to your brain that you need more sugar.
These signals are in the form of cravings.
By eating a massive quantity of sugar in the morning, I basically sentenced myself to a day full of cravings before it even started.
I spent the entire morning irritable and moody. My fruit smoothie breakfast only helped for thirty minutes. I had can of V-8 after the morning news meeting and still couldn’t focus.
All I could think about was sugar. Watching my coworkers consume their sodas and their Pop-Tarts nearly made me give up this whole detox endeavor.
I would literally shave my head to get my hands on some Double Stuf Oreos.
Any tips for my cravings? I’m desperate. Post them below or send them to JenniferM@kvia.com.
