New Details On EPISD Plan To Add 30 Minutes To Class In Wake Of Winter Storm

Tuesday night, the El Paso Independent School District Board of Trustees voted to add 30 minutes of instruction time to 14 school days beginning in March.

The time will add up to one makeup day for the district, following this month’s winter storm.

Wednesday, EPISD Superintendent Dr. Lorenzo Garcia told ABC-7 the 30 minutes would be added to the end of the school day.

How the extra time is divided during the day will be up to the individual campuses.

Garcia said the board listened to the public’s input before making the decision.

The superintendent also said the plan would actually save the district money compared with having students come in on a Saturday, another option.

But some students at Franklin High School told ABC-7 they would have preferred a weekend makeup day.

“I’d rather have it where we just come in on Saturday,” said senior Matthew Gonzalez. “It’s just one day and we can get it over with.”

The extra 30 minutes begin March 8th and run through April 1st.
