Freeway Chase Suspect Also A Sex Offender, Watch Video of Pursuit Here

New information on the man who led El Paso sheriff’s deputies and police officers on a high speed chase Wednesday evening through El Paso County and onto the freeways of the city.

The Sheriff’s office identified the suspect Thursday as Rickey Perry, 46 of Montana Vista.

In a criminal complaint, investigators allege prior to the chase Perry stabbed his common-law wife several times in the arms and chest at the couple’s home on the 3700 block of Gerard in Montana Vista.

Sheriff’s Deputy Jesse Tovar said emergency crews responded to reports of the domestic violence incident at 5:25 p.m. and when they arrived at the property, they found a woman “severely injured.” She was rushed to an east El Paso hospital but is expected to recover.

A description of Perry’s vehicle, a red 1986 Ford F-250, was issued and deputies spotted it nearby. The chase began as the suspect drove east on Montana avenue towards Loop 375, Tovar said.

The cameras showed deputies trailing him as he sped down Loop 375 and then headed south on U.S. 54. At least three patrol cars chased him as motorists did their best to steer clear from the truck’s path.

At one point, the red pickup hit the cement barriers of an off-ramp several times as it raced towards the newly opened Spur 601, renamed the Liberty Expressway.

A DPS trooper assisting in the chase used spike strips to stop the truck, which completely lost a tire by the time the chase came to a halt between Sergeant Major Boulevard and Global Reach Drive in East-Central El Paso.

According to the criminal complaint, Perry was ordered out of the truck at gunpoint. Investigators said as he walked toward the deputies he pointed his finger at his own head and told them to “shoot” him.

When officers saw Perry was not armed, he was tasered and taken into custody.

Investigators said he had a “severe laceration” in the neck area which appeared to be self-inflicted.

The ABC-7 I-Team was able to dig up Perry’s criminal record. It includes a 1988 arrest and subsequent conviction for sexual assault of a child. According to the Texas Sex Offender Registry, the victim was a 9-year-old girl.

A background check also turned up arrests for DWI in 1990 and an assault arrest in 1993. Sheriff’s Spokesman Tovar told ABC-7 Perry was also arrested last year for failing to register as a sex offender.
