StormTRACK Weather: Strong Winds Hit The Borderland
We knew the fast winds and strong gusts were headed our way when ABC-7’s weather team issued a First Alert. One Northeast El Pasoan, though, had another warning for borderland residents on Sunday afternoon.
“Don’t go outside!” said one man who spotted our cameras as he was pumping gas.
Many wind-weary borderland residents apparently felt the same way. In the Northeast, parks were largely empty. ABC-7 crews even reported a few light flurries near the highway.
On the East side, people bundled up but had to hold on to their hoodies, lest they get blown off by the breezes.
Further east, howling winds pushed through palm fronds and kicked up dust. Netza Estrada said he disliked the severe weather. “I work in an outdoor soccer field,” he explained. “So I couldn’t go to work today– that means no money for me.”
The chill was enough to make shoppers run for cover to their cars. “We already thought we were gonna have summer weather,” said Rosalba Urbina, a Far East resident. “We were ready for shorts.”
Over on the West side, Monica Wong and some of her friends chose to brave the winds for a game similar to archball. Wong said the Sun City felt more like the Windy City. “I can’t even stand still! It’s almost like Chicago.”
