UPDATE: Man Charged In Deadly Stabbing In South El Paso; Victim ID’d
A man accused of killing a man during a robbery was spotted with the knife and cash in hand, police said.
Royce Jackman knew that Clifton L. Baker had money in his pocket, and according to the complaint affidavit, Jackman wanted it to buy drugs.
The two got into an argument when Jackman demanded the money and the 55-year-old Baker refused. Police said Royce attacked the Baker — knocking him to the ground — and repeatedly punched and kicked him.
Baker then pulled out a knife in an attempt to defend himself. That’s when Jackman kicked him in the face, causing him to let go of the knife. Jackman then took the knife and stabbed Baker several times, police said.
Officers were called to the 1100 block of Texas Avenue near Noble Street at 12:16 a.m. regarding the fight. Police spokesman Darrel Petry told ABC-7 that officers were on patrol in the area when the 911 call was placed. When they arrived, officers found Baker on the sidewalk, bleeding.
Emergency crews took Baker to University Medical Center, where he later died.
Petry said the officers spotted Jackman, who was still in the area, shortly after the stabbing. Officials say that Jackman had the knife in one hand and an undisclosed amount of money in the other.
Jackman was arrested on suspicion of capital murder. He remains in the county jail with a bond set at $250,000. The investigation is ongoing.
Both men lived on the 1200 block of Myrtle Avenue.
