Alumni Football Blog #2: What a Difference a Couple of Weeks (& Practices) Make
Well now, two weeks and two practices down and the Wildcat Alumni team is looking pretty good. This past Sunday featured our first practice with our coaches present. We also got our playbook, which looks suspiciously like the one I recall seeing fellow classmates get back in 7th grade.
Speaking of 7th grade, a couple of the players made the comment that it really did seem like their first day trying out for the football team. Everyone wants to be the running back or quarterback, nobody wants to block.
On the good side, plenty of us stepped up to be the offensive line during the first practice; the second practice refined both the plays and the defensive & offensive lines. On the bad side, our coaches made all of us jog the length of the football field twice. No records were set, but nobody passed out either; and the coaches had their first opportunity to remind all of us about conditioning.
As for condition and conditioning, all involved see to be in pretty good shape. As for me, aside from some odd shaped bruises and a couple of scrapes, this ol’ chassis is hanging on pretty well. We’ll see what happens once we get our equipment and the speeds at practice increase.
Now its on to our first night practice, set for Wednesday, Dec 21st. For a select few, we’ll be revisiting the nighttime gridiron after only a couple of months, but for many of the players, it will be the first time under the lights since they last played high school football. Add to that the excitement of getting our helmet and other equipment before practice, and it should be a pretty interesting night.
For those locals wishing to drop by, we’ll be at Wildcat Stadium around 7pm, just follow those Wednesday night lights.
Look for action shots from this practice soon.
