Meeting Set For Tonight On Lincoln Center’s Future

The Lincoln Recreational Center has been closed since the summer of 2006, when city crews found the building contaminated with mold. An overhaul of the 90-year-old building would cost $3.6 million, more than the city would like to invest.

Yet, plans to demolish the structure have been put on hold.

District 3 City Representative Emma Acosta has pushed for the city to hold public meetings for residents of the area to get information and give input on the future of the building.

“These are murals that have been inventoried by the Museum and Cultural Affairs D epartment,” Acosta told ABC-7 in April of 2011, referring to the pillars of the Interstate 10 overpass in front of the rec center that are adorned with artwork. “And then for us to just say, ‘We’re just going to knock it down, and we’re not going to do anything in that area,’ I think is improper.”

The first public meeting is Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. in the auditorium of Silva Magnet High School, 121 Val Verde St. The second meeting is on Saturday in the Jefferson High School cafeteria at 10 a.m. The school is located at 4700 Alameda Ave.
