Driver In Deadly Hit-And-Run Is Sentenced To 20 Years In Prison
A driver convicted of running over and killing a man was sentenced to 20 years in prison Friday afternoon.
Darrel Brown received the maximum sentence in the death of 22-year-old Fernando Vargas out side the Golden Nugget bar in 2010.
Prosecutors said Brown ran over Vargas after getting into a fight inside the bar .
Brown’s attorney argued that his client was just defending himself.
Prosecutors showed a police interrogation video in which Brown admitted drinking about ten beers before getting behind the wheel. At one point, the video shows a detective asking brown how fast he was going the moment, Brown tells him he was going “at least 20 miles per hour.”
Prosecutors also played video taken from inside the golden nugget lounge on the night of the incident.
On Monday a witness testified that Brown was rapping on stage and pushed a man with whom he was “battling.”
A fight broke out between two groups of and there were bottles flying.
David Navarro told the that once outside, Brown got into a pickup and ran over Vargas, who “flew in the air.” He later died.
Another man, 36-year-old Ubaldo Solis, was also killed that night. He was stabbed in the neck.
Jose Angel Bonilla was charged with Solis’ murder. He remains jailed.
