Congressional Candidates Will Debate At Coronado High Tonight

A group of students at Coronado High School plan to put El Paso’s congressional candidates on the hot seat.

The organizers, some of them not ever old enough to vote, hope to fill the Coronado Fine Arts Auditorium. They said America’s youth is usually overlooked in politics, and it’s about time that changed.

“Its really great for the students that are maybe just turning 18, soon to be 18, soon to be voters, to get involved in politics, because they will be the decision makers impacting the future of America,” student Adi Soto said.

Monday’s debate will feature the four Democratic primary candidates for the 16th Congressional District. They are incumbent U.S. Rep. Silvestre Reyes and challengers Beto O’Rourke, Jerome Tilghman and Ben Mendoza.

The students are no strangers to politics. This will be the third forum for some in the group who have also founded an organization for high school students to get involved in politics.

Organizing an event of this size is a challenge, especially for students balancing school and extracurricular activities. But this group of young leaders knows the importance of getting involved in their community even before they reach the legal voting age.

The debate is open to the public and will be at 6 p.m. ABC-7’s Estela Casas will moderate the debate.
