Mayor, CVB Chief Hope To Excite El Pasoans About Boxing Match

El Paso Mayor John Cook has taken his share of punches the past couple of years.

But when the championship boxing match was pulled from the Sun Bowl in April because it wasn’t an “appropriate venue,” that got the mayor fighting mad.

“I took the gloves off,” Cook said at a news conference on June 5.

Boxing fans and local politicians banded together and were able to get the fight back on at the Sun Bowl for June 16 after convincing the University of Texas chancellor that El Paso is a safe city.

Cook and the El Paso Convention and Visitors Bureau are starting an 11 day rally to get El Pasoans pumped about the fight and to fill up the Sun Bowl.

In the front row of the news conference, members of El Paso City Council started to playfully do the wave.
