Ramos Court Residents Still Frustrated 1 Year After Flooding Devastates Homes

A year after a breached levee flooded homes in central El Paso’s Ramos Court, ABC-7 talked to residents about their lingering frustrations.

Several residents told ABC-7 their homes are still damaged with cracked floors, stripped walls and broken furniture.

The damage was caused when water from the nearby Franklin canal flooded out more than a dozen homes on June 4, 2011. The flooding happened when a levee gave in. According to the El Paso County Water Improvement District Number 1, the levee breach was caused by a gopher hole.

Residents received checks from the insurance company employed by the El Paso County Water Improvement District Number 1, but said the ammount was not enough to cover ruined appliances, moldy furniture and cracked walls.

Some residents were also frustrated because no drainage improvements have been done on the street. ABC-7 spoke with the city representative responsible for the area, who said Ramos Court needs to be redone altogether and is part of a $210 million street repair plan to be paid for by certificates of obligation.
