Mexico troops detain son of most-wanted drug lord

Mexico’s Navy says it has detained one of the sons of Mexico’s most-wanted drug kingpin, Joaquin Guzman Loera.

It says marines detained Jesus Alfredo Guzman Salazar in the western state of Jalisco.

The Navy announced the detention Thursday in a brief statement, but it didn’t say when Guzman Salazar was caught or offer any other details.

Earlier this month, the U.S. Treasury Department announced it had placed financial sanctions on the 26-year-old Guzman Salazar and his mother, Maria Alejandrina Salazar Hernandez. That bars American citizens from doing business with them and allows authorities to freeze their assets in the U.S.

Guzman Loera escaped prison in 2001 and has evaded authorities ever since, moving from hideout to hideout as he directs the operations of his powerful cartel.
