Judge: Man Accused Of Bidding On Horses For Zetas Can Be Released On Bond

A 20-year-old man accused of bidding at racehorse auctions on behalf of Mexican drug lords is set to be released on bond after a federal judge ruled the evidence against him was not enough to warrant his detention.

Raul Ramirez was indicted for bidding on behalf of Jose Trevino, whose brothers are reputed Zetas cartel leaders Miguel and Oscar Trevino. Jose Trevino hired him as a stable boy. Ramirez’s attorney, Robert Harris, said during Friday’s detention hearing that his client earned $500 a week, was not paid to bid and ignored the origin of money used to buy horses.

Ramirez turned himself in Monday at a port of entry in El Paso.

Of the 14 indicted, eight are in custody, one has been granted bail and five remain at large.
