Animal Services continuing half-off cat adoptions on Fridays

Feline Fridays will continue at the City of El Paso Animal Shelter indefinitely, the Environmental Services Department announced Tuesday.

Environmental Services, which manages the City’s Animal Services shelter, is joining the Humane Society of El Paso in extending a recent promotion that offers cat adoptions for half-price.

Effective immediately, every Friday the public can adopt an adult cat or kitten for $50 ($10 additional for pets at ages requiring rabies vaccinations). The fee includes spay/neuter surgery, age-appropriate vaccinations and microchip.

“Feline Fridays should help us reduce the cat euthanasia rate,” Kurt Fenstermacher, Environmental Services Department deputy director, said. “This initiative is another example of our department’s commitment to make El Paso a more humane community. We hope potential pet owners take advantage of the reduced adoption rates. Existing pet owners can do their share to help decrease the euthanasia rate by spaying and neutering their pets.”

Each year, approximately 23,000 animals are euthanized at the city’s shelter. About half of them are cats.

Adoption hours for Animal Services are from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The Animal Services shelter is located at 5001 Fred Wilson.
