El Paso Electric warns customers of possible scams

In recent weeks, El Paso Electric (EPE) has learned of several scams that prey on EPE customers. The scam artists urge customers to provide personal information or payment to a third party.

While some scammers represent themselves to be EPE employees and tell customers their account is past due, others claim they have a “good deal” by offering a payment package at reduced rates. There are also national schemes which claim that a new federal assistance program will pay up to one thousand dollars on utility bills.

El Paso Electric reminds customers to never give personal information over the telephone unless the customer initiated the contact with El Paso Electric. El Paso Electric customers should only use company-authorized methods to pay their electric bill. For verification of any account information, customers can call El Paso Electric’s customer service number (915) 543-5970.

El Paso Electric urges those who believe they have been the victim of a scam involving payment of electric service to call their bank as well as the police department.
