Housing Authority extends period for senior citizens and people with disabilities to apply for studio units

The Housing Authority of the City of El Paso, Texas (HACEP) has extended the window for the elderly (age 62 and above) and/or persons with disabilities to apply for studio-sized (0-bedroom) public housing units from July 2, 2012 through August 31, 2012. These units feature a studio that is suitable only for single-person families. The waitlist will remain open through the month of August 2012, and applications are only accepted through HACEP’s website at www.hacep.org.

In order to apply online, applicants must log on to www.hacep.org and click on the “Online Application” button on the left-hand side. A separate window will open with bilingual instructions and a list of the required application information, which includes:

1.Name;
2. Mailing address;
3. Dates of birth and social security numbers for each family member on the pre-application;
4. Gross annual income for the applying family;
5. Driver’s license or State ID numbers for all family members who have one.

Once all of the fields are filled out, simply click the “Submit Application” button and the application will automatically upload to the wait list based on the day and time of submission. If any required fields are omitted or incorrectly filled out, a red message will appear informing applicants where the error has occurred. Applicants should print or record the confirmation ticket number for their records.

Applicants may apply for housing using any computer that is connected to the Internet, including the computers available at the El Paso Public Library System and the VOLAR Center for Independent Living located at 1220 Golden Key Circle. If applicants require a reasonable accommodation, they may contact Claudia Vargas at cvargas@hacep.org or (915) 849-3834. The waitlists for all other public housing bedroom sizes remain closed, in addition to the waitlists for the Housing Choice Voucher Program and the Section 8 New Construction Program.
