Mich. band’s Fort Bliss performance to be shown tonight on E!

A Canton, Mich. pop band’s opening act performance for Gym Class Heroes that was filmed at Fort Bliss last month will be shown on E! at 8 p.m. today.

TwentyForSeven will appear on the second episode of “Opening Act,” a show that allows a solo singer or a band to perform as the opening act for an established, big name performer.

TwentyForSeven was chosen after impressing the show’s producer Nigel Lythgoe with their online videos.

Lythgoe might be better known for creating and being executive producer of hit TV shows “American Idol” and “So You Think You Can Dance.”

“We decided to start doing covers on YouTube and we never really thought anything would come from it,” guitarist Blake Hayes told Detroit’s WWJ TV station. “And Nigel’s talent scouting team came along and found us on there, and the show happened.”

Things are a bit rocky for the band as shown in a preview of the episode. Lythgoe asked the band to sing for him and, well, the title of the clip – “Lack of Talent” – says it all.

Lythgoe compared singer Rajiv Dhal’s voice to cats being thrown off of the Empire State Building when he tried to hit high notes in a Jason Mraz song.

But Hayes said everything works out in the end.
