20-year-old man arrested for allegedly stealing metal scraps in Chaparral, NM
Dona Ana County Sheriff’s deputies have arrested a Chaparral man wanted on charges of allegedly stealing scrap metal and vehicle parts.
Lorenzo Cano, 20, of the 100 block of East Lisa in Chaparral, was arrested at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday.
On Dec. 20, 2013, a sheriff’s deputy noticed a group of men standing near a pickup truck loaded with scrap metal.
After making contact with the men, the deputy determined the scrap metal and various vehicle parts did not belong to any of the individuals.
During a subsequent investigation, deputies say Cano admitted to stealing the metal after climbing a 6-foot tall chain link fence into the neighboring property.
Cano told deputies he intended to take the scrap metal to a recycling plant to exchange for cash.
Deputies say they have seen a spike in the number of metal theft cases in recent months in Chaparral and are trying to determine if Cano is connected to any of those investigations.
Cano was transported to the Doa Ana County Detention Center on one count of non-residential burglary. He’s being held on a $5,000 secured bond.
