Drone crashes at White Sands National Monument; White Sands closes until further notice

A QF-4 Drone crashed at about 9:08 a.m. Friday on White Sands National Monument, four to five miles off of Holloman Air Force Base’s Runway 22.

The cause of the crash is unknown at this time, but is being investigated.

The unmanned aircraft was conducting a routine training mission and the monument was closed in advance of the test mission and will remain closed until further notice. Please call 575-479-6124 before you visit to make sure it is open. The visitor center and gift shop will still be open during this closure.

Holloman officials say there is no threat to the public at this time.

The aircraft was assigned to Detachment 1, 82nd Aerial Targets Squadron, which is a tenant unit at Holloman assigned to the 53rd Weapons Evaluation Group.
