Trial begins for man accused in killings of U.S. Consulate employee, husband

It has been nearly four years since an El Paso couple was gunned down in Juarez, sparing the life of their baby daughter.

The trial for Arturo Gallegos-Castrellon begins Monday at the federal courthouse. He is said to be responsible for the killings.

Leslie Ann Enriquez, a U.S. Consulate employee in Juarez, her husband Arthur Redelfs and their young baby were headed back to El Paso in March of 2010 from a birthday when they were surrounded by gunmen and attacked.

Enriquez and Redelfs, a corrections officer at the El Paso Detention Center, both died.

The husband of another Consulate employee was also killed.

Gallegos-Castrellon is an alleged member of the Aztecas Gang and linked to a drug cartel.

He also faces drug trafficking and money laundering charges.

Gallegos-Castrellon made some serious allegations of his own when he was extradited from Mexico in 2012. He claimed he and his wife were tortured after his arrest in Juarez.

The defendant said the officers who tortured him were acting on behalf of the U.S. Government.

Gallegos-Castrellon has been behind bars at the El Paso County Jail since his extradition.

He is one of 35 defendants named in an indictment, 33 are in custody, six are awaiting extradition to the U.S. and and a total of 25 people have pleaded guilty.
