UMC extends Childern’s deadline to Friday morning

we’re now an hour past the deadline u- m-c gave el paso children’s hospital to accept its final offer for help. but it looks like the deadline didn’t carry any weight. that’s because a new deadline was issued today, giving children’s until 10 o’clock tomorrow morning to accept u-m-c’s terms… or fend for itself. remember, children’s is struggling to keep its doors open, now in bankruptcy proceedings .. umc, el paso’s county hospital, says children’s owes it more than 100- million dollars for staff and services. and today abc-seven’s complete coverage continues with maria garcia. there were two options for children’s today: accept u-m-c’s final offer to find a partner other than umc. or reject that offer and meet u-m-c in court again. umc saying this is the closest it’s come to finding common ground with the troubled children’s hospital. the negotiations are confidential, so we don’t know what the terms of this latest offer are. here’s what we do know for sure: if children’s were to accept this offer from umc – it would pause its lawsuit against umc – and look for a partner. umc would work with children’s on a backup plan – in case children’s couldn’t solidify a deal with another partner. if children’s rejects this last deal, then umc will ask a bankruptcy court to select its reorganization plan, rather than children’s. so for the county: the best case scenario is children’s accepts this offer and is actually able to find a partner to inject money into the bankrupt hospital: 01:55 we would love for them to find a partner who’d be willint to maintain the mission, the vision, the independence. that’s a priority for us so we really worked very hard to try to address the concessions that they wanted us to make but again within reason 02:20 this is the closest we’ve been since all of this started. we’ve reported u- m-c may no longer want to take over children’s because children’s may owe millions to the federal government. escobar told us today they’ve gotten closer to figuring out how much children’s may owe and it looks like it may be a manageable amount – meaning umc could probably still take over children’s. new information tonight… … on rex holt of the guyrex
